Once again England disappoints at a major tournament; this is slowly becoming the norm for the Three Lions. England was eliminated from Euro 2016 after losing 2-1 to Iceland in the Round of 16 of the tournament on Monday. England was astonishingly poor throughout the tournament as they failed to produce any meaningful performance. Unsurprisingly England’s manager Roy Hodgson stepped down from his post after the shock defeat to Iceland. The wounds of England’s football goes way  deeper than the manager. Even with that said, Roy Hodgson should have never been the manager in the first place. We saw in the Euros that his tactical vision was lacking from as early as the opening game when we saw Harry Kane taking ‘set piece’ to their last game when we saw he took 15 mins to insert Marcus Rashford who was arguably their best player in that game. Roy Hodgson showed us that he did not have the brilliance to change a game from the bench. I can tell you that after 4 matches and over 360mins of football Roy Hodgson still doesn’t know his best eleven.

Hodgson made a huge blunder in the selection process; the players that he selected for France 2016 were not all deserving of a spot. Jack Wilshere is a player that managed to play only 3 games for Arsenal the entire 2015/16 campaign due to his injury problems yet still, he was named a member of the team. Raheem Sterling was not impressive for Manchester City in what was an underwhelming season and he was also in the squad. Wayne Rooney is another player that was not particularly good at his club in the previous season yet he was in France in the thick of the action for England. The fact that these players were selected showed that Roy Hodgson picked the team on reputation instead of on current form.

The squad was not the best that it could have been, players such as Danny Drinkwater, Jermain Defoe, and Kevin Nolan could have all made the squad based on their performance for the clubs during the regular season. The English squad was also lacking experience at the tournament as we saw that the hope of the team rested with players that were playing at their first ever major tournament. Such players, Eric Deir, Dele Alli and Harry Kane all saw a lot of minutes at the tournament. They were given too much of a responsibility and they simply folded as the pressure mounted.

The inexperience of the team was evident in that last game against Iceland; We saw an English team that was not able to change the game in their favor. They were incredibly poor in that game and we saw a sight that was all too familiar a ‘failing English team’.
This brings me to my next point.  There have always been huge expectations placed on England’s squads of the past and there was no difference this time around. The huge expectations come from the fact that these players are household names, we watch them week in, week out playing in the best league in the world. The English Premier League is certainly the most competitive league in Europe, hence why many believe it is the best league in the world. The best players in the English Premier League, however, are not English players. Over the last decade only twice has an English player been voted the player of the year in England. This shows that the best players in the league are usually foreign players. English players are overrated and overhyped, they are not particularly good. This is part of the reason they continually fail on the big stage.

England going forward does not need to be hyped up. The sooner the world forgets that they can play football the sooner they will actually surprise us at a major tournament by at lea.st getting to the finals.

Those were my thoughts on English football. What are yours? Share them in the comments below

The European Championship rolls on Thursday as the tournament heads to the Quarter Finals stage. The big story coming out of France is the collapse of Spain at the hands of the Italians and English hearts being frozen by Iceland. I will visit these stories in another post, though it should be no surprise if you have read my preview for both Spain and England. I want to focus on the final eight teams remaining in the tournament, namely Poland, Portugal, Wales, Belgium, Italy, Germany, France and Iceland. Which four teams will book their spot in the semi finals?

Poland v Portugal

Poland vs Iceland friendly match

Poland

The first quarter-finals will be contested by Poland and Portugal, two teams that will be trying to get to the semi-finals of this tournament. Poland was not at all impressive against Switzerland in their round of 16 match which they won 5-4 on penalties. They will need a much-improved performance if they are going to get past Portugal. Poland’s star player, Robert Lewandowski has to be better than he has been thus far in the tournament. He has been one of the surprise flops at this tournament.Poland has to do better in position and their wide players need to get quality balls into the box for Lewandowski to work with.

portugual

Portugual

Portugal for me has not been good by their standards at this tournament.I know Christiano Ronaldo has scored his two goals when it mattered most, but I need more from him because he is far better than his current performance shows. This is a man that has scored over 50 goals for his club Real Madrid in the last 6 season and then came into this tournament and went 20 shots before his first goal. I know Portugal has the players -(nothing like what he has at club level with Madrid) -that can provide the support that Ronaldo needs to do what he does best, which is scoring goals. Portugal is in a good position to make a long run in these finals, if they improve on their previous performance they can get to the finals.

Poland vs Portugal will be a closely contested match and the team that wants it more will win. Poland has few players that can cause some problems for Portugal but Portugal has Cristiano Ronaldo. I’m predicting a closely contested match coming down to the wire when these two teams meet on Thursday.

Belgium v Wales

belgium-team-line-up-football_3469793Belgium vs Wales will be a highly anticipated clash. Belgium are the favorites to win but I will not right off a potential upset by the Welsh. Belgium has some quality players but the problem that I have with Belgium is the coach. I simply don’t think he is a good tactician; we saw what happened when they faced Italy. Italy came with an approach that Belgium wasn’t used to and the coach could not respond to those tactics with similar adjustments of his own. Having quality players is one thing but having the tactics necessary to change a game is another thing. If you need an example look no further than Argentina, quality players but not enough fight and guts to get the job done. I will visit the Argentine ‘curse’ in another post but you get the point.

I am of the belief that Belgium has one of the best squads on paper, a squad that should be able to pose a threat to any team. Belgium will need a big performance from their big performers when they face Wales on Friday. Those big performers; Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne have not been consistent in these finals. I am going to make a definitive statement and say that if Hazard and De Bruyne play at their best no team will be able to prevent them from winning this championship.

Wales-342099

Wales

I learned something interesting about Wales while watching their game against Northern Ireland. Wales like to play off the ball, that is they allow their opponents to dominate position. This is an effective tactic when you have players that can perfect the art of counter attacking football. However, upon against the quality of Belgium, it might be dangerous for Wales to play off the ball. The hope of the Welsh will once again rest upon Gareth Bale, to his credit he has delivered thus far scoring three goals in four games. Bale and Wales will face a true test on Friday and the reality of it all is that the Welsh will have to beat Belgium; Bale alone will not be enough.

This game will be heavily contested in the midfield and that is not a plus for Wales. The likes of Joe Allen will have his hands full against the physicality and brilliance of Belgium’s Axel Witsel. Wales’ full backs will be called into action quite frequently in this game as much of what Belgium create will be coming from their wide players. It will be interesting to see how Wales respond to this wide play. The availability of Wales’ captain Ashely Williams is uncertain and if he is not able to play they will have a hard time containing the attacks from Belgium. Thomas Vermaelen will be absent for Belgium due to a suspension so Wales might be able to capitalize on his absence.

Predictions

I am predicting that Portugal and Wales will make the semi finals.

The Copa America Centenario will come to an end on Sunday (June 26) when last year’s finalist Argentina and Chile go head to head for South America’s biggest prize. The Copa America has provided us with some really beautiful and exciting football but as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. The question that is yet to be answered is, Who will walk away as champions?

Argentina

Argentina-Announced-their-Copa-America-2016-team

La Albiceleste booked their place in the finals after blowing past the USA  with a comfortable 4-0 victory. Argentina throughout this tournament has looked absolutely spectacular.  According to FIFA world rankings, they are #1 in the world and FIFA got it spot on. The test for Argentina once more is getting over the line, they have recently lost their last two finals in a major tournament (2014 World Cup and 2015 Copa America). Come Sunday Lionel Messi and company will be looking to end that run and bring home Argentina’s first major trophy since they won the Copa America in 1993. I think this Argentine team has what it takes to end their trophy drought that has lasted for 23 years.

Key to Victory

Argentina going up against a very good Chilean team has to do a better job of retaining possession of the ball. In their last two games, they allowed their opponents a lot of time on the ball. Venezulea made them pay by scoring a good goal while the USA failed to capitalize as they were astonishingly poor. Argentina can not afford to turn over the ball in the midfield because Chile will make them pay. Javier Macherano will be instrumental for Argentina in this game because he is playing in front of the two central defenders and will have to ensure that he doesn’t lose the ball in dangerous areas. Lionel Messi has been spectualr for Argentina and they need another superb game from him to win the trophy. We know what to expect from Messi, Argentina’s hope rest with him and his supporting cast; players such as Gonzalo Higuain, Ever Banega, and Erik Lamela.

Chile

Chile Copa America 2016 Squad, Schedule, Kit, Live Stream

Chile has made their way into the finals after beating Mexico and Colombia in the Quarter and Semi Finals respectively. This is a very good Chilean team and they have the players that can cause problems for Argentina. In Chile’s last game they were without their midfield maestro, Arturo Vidal; they will need his experience and leadership against a very tough Argentine team. Arturo also brings the physical intensity that Chile plays with so if he is not able to play Chile will be in a tough spot. Chile has not been in the best of form this year as they have lost 4 of their 9 games in 2016. I must point out, however, that they have won their last four games scoring an average of over 3 goals per game in that span. They have certainly improved as throughout the course of this tournament, Chile lost their opening match of the tournament to Argentina 2-1.

Keys to Victory

Chile has to try and dominate the midfield area, they have to break up Argentina’s smooth play and rhythm. This is why Vidal will be important for this game because he is their best midfield player by a long stretch. They have to use their physicality to get Argentina off their game. Chile has to get the ball up to Alexis Sanchez on the wing so he can make those power dribbles that we often see for Arsenal in the EPL. The Chile’s defence will have to keep Argentina’s Lionel Messi from playing those sublime passes in and around the final third. To do this the defenders have to be disciplined and resolute for 90 mins.

Prediction

I am excepting another beautiful game from two of South America’s best. I think Argentina will win this game 2-1 which has been the scoreline the last two times these teams met.

NBA Draft 2016: 5 things you need to know

Posted: June 23, 2016 by 48-NINETY SPORTS in Uncategorized

The highly anticipated NBA draft 2016 will be held on June 23, 2016, at Brooklyn’s Barclay center where NBA teams will take turns selecting amateur U.S. college basketball players and other eligible players, including international players. The draft lottery that determined the order in which the teams select players took place during the playoffs, on May 17, 2016. This year’s draft is special because it is the first year in which all fourteen teams that missed the playoffs remained in the exact spots they were towards the end of the season. This means that Philadelphia 76ers who had the worst record last season and this season (winning only 10 games and losing 73).earned the number 1 pick. In other words, best players in draft often times go to the worst teams in the league. According to reports from ESPN’s, Brian Windhorst the 76ers have told Ben Simmons from the Louisana State University  that they will select him at number 1. If these reports hold true it ends the suspense that normally surrounds the 1 pick.

Ahead of the draft on Thursday here are 5 things you need to know

  1.  The draft order for the first 10 picks are as follow:
    Philadelphia 76ers
    Los Angeles Lakers
    Boston Celtics
    Phoenix Suns
    Minnesota Timberwolves
    Sacramento Kings
    Toronto Raptors
    Milwaukee Bucks
  2. How did Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors both get a top 10 pick ?

Among the teams with top 10 picks this year, Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors stands out. These teams both finished the regular season with a winning record of  48-34 and 56-26 respectively. They were consequently the 5th and 2nd seeded team in the Eastern Conference of the 2016 NBA playoffs. So then, if the best players in the drafts often go to the worst teams in the league, how did Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors end up with the third and ninth overall pick?

Pre-draft trades.

Prior to the date of the draft, teams in the league engaged in trades that can result in players being traded for future draft picks. On July 12, 2013, the Boston Celtics were involved in such a trade with the Brooklyn Nets. This resulted in a number of players from the Celtics being traded to Brooklyn. In return, the Celtics were given 3 future first round picks in 2014, 2016 and 2018, so technically this is how Celtics ended up with the third pick.  On July 10, 2013, the Toronto Raptors were involved in a similar trade with the New York Knicks and this resulted in Toronto acquiring three players along with three draft picks of which the first round 2016 was included.

3. The top three players in the draft.

Ben SimmondsAccording to many many experts, the three top players in the draft are Louisiana State University’s Ben Simmons, Duke’s Brandon Ingram and International player Kris Dun from Israel. Ben Simmons filled the stats sheet while playing in the NCAA, he averaged 19.2 PPG (points per game) along with 11.8 RPG (rebounds per game) and 4.8 APG.(assists per game) These numbers are pretty amazing for a college player, among former NBA players that had similar averages while playing in the NCAA are Larry Bird and Oscar Robertson. If the stats are anything to go by, Simmons has a very promising future in the NBA.

Brandon Ingram

Brabndon Ingram

Brandon Ingram

Ingram has an excellent jump shot and he can shoot the three-pointers as well. He shot 41% from 3-point range and a decent 46% from 2-point range. He is also a good rebounder. One of the downsides of his game is that he doesn’t have a post game and he is not very good at finishing at the rim.

Kris Dun

kris-dunn

Kris Dun

Dun is a very good passer of the ball and he can score as well. DraftExpress wrote on their website that “Dun has an exceptional physical profile for a point guard in today’s NBA , standing 6’4” in shoes, with a terrific frame, a long 6’9” wingspan, and elite quickness and leaping ability that place him in rarefied air by even NBA standards.” In addition to being  a very good passer and scorer of the ball, his size makes him good on defense as well.

4. Team to watch after the draft.

Minnesota Timberwolves are slowly turning into a force to be reckoned with. T’wolves already have the last 3 number 1 picks in Karl Town, Andrew Wiggins, and Anthony Bennett. They also have the last two Rookie of the Year winners (Town and Wiggins).  With another quality draft pick to go along with new coach Tom Thibodeau, I say Minnesota should make the playoffs in the tough western conference next year. I think their draft pick will help them to continue to build a formidable team.

5. The draft takes places on June 23 at Barclay Center in Brooklyn and will be televised live on ESPN at 7p.m. ET so check your local listings and don’t miss out.

The Fantastic four: Copa America Semi Finals

Posted: June 21, 2016 by 48-NINETY SPORTS in Football

The Copa America Centenario is winding down and we have two mouth-watering semi-finals clash on our hands. Argentina will face hosts, the USA on Tuesday and South American heavyweight, Colombia will take on defending champions, Chile on Wednesday. The tournament has lived up to the hype and I must say with the exception of Mexico’s atrocious performance, the quarter-finals did not deliver many surprises. Now that we’re down to four the question is who will make it to the finals?

Argentina vs USA

copa-america-usa-2016-usa-vs-costa-rica-at-soldier-field-stadium-in-chicago-309665

Team USA

Hosts, the USA has the chance to advance to the finals if they are able to get past last year’s finalist, Argentina. The USA advanced to the semi-finals by beating Ecuador 2-1 in the quarter-finals. The USA played a very good attacking game and their pressure paid dividends as they were able to score two crucial goals which ultimately lift them over the line. USA will be without three key players for the semi-finals due to card issues. Jermaine Jones, Bobby Wood, and Alejandro Bedoya will all be serving a one-game suspension and will be unavailable against Argentina. This is a tough loss for USA as those three players have been very important to their semi-finals run. Ultimately, USA won’t have enough to get past an Argentine team that will have all of their players ready for this crucial game.

Argentina-Announced-their-Copa-America-2016-team

Argentina

Argentina looked absolutely superb against Venezuela. I will not be carried away by this performance though because I saw an Argentine team that was breathtaking on attack but suspect on defence. This Argentine team is faulty at the back, however, their attacking profligacy often overshadows their defensive frailty. I think Argentina will control the midfield and ultimately the game and they will win by two clear goals.

I am predicting that the final score at the end will be 3-1.

Colombia vs Chile

Colombia-Team-Full-Squad-here-For-Copa-America-2016

Colombia

This should be a fantastic game between two of South America’s best teams. Colombia got to the semi-finals by beating Peru 4-2 on penalties while Chile advanced after trashing Mexico 7-0. Colombia was not at their best against Peru as they struggled to score in 90 mins. One positive for Colombia in this game was that they were solid defensively. Contrastingly, on the attack, they didn’t create enough opportunities for striker Carlos Bacca. Colombia played a lot through winger Juan Cuadrado but his final ball was a bit lacking against Peru. Colombia has to be better if they are going to get past Chile.

Chile Copa America 2016 Squad, Schedule, Kit, Live StreamChile was excellent against Mexico as they ended Mexico’s 22-game unbeaten run. Chile is a dangerous proposition when they are scoring at will. We know they will be sound defensively so if they are allowed time and space on the ball they will devastate the opponent. Chile is in a good position to validate their Copa America triumph from 2015. Chile, with the likes of Sanchez and Vidal, will be tough to stop and if Colombia doesn’t do a better job of getting Carlos Bacca involved they will lose.

I am predicting that this game will go to penalties. The result after penalty will be 4-3 in favor of Chile.

NBA-2016-Finals-Game-7The NBA Finals has boiled down to a game 7 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California on Sunday (June 19) . There may be some controversy about how we got to the game 7, whether it be the suspension of Draymond Green for game 5 or Steph Curry fouling out in game 6, however, there is no denying that Cleveland showed up big time to win the last two games. We should all be looking forward to a thrilling game at the Oracle Arena. LeBron said after game 6 “the two greatest words ever invented were game 7”, judging by his comments I would say he will be ready for this game 7. Steph Curry after being fouled out in that crucial game 6 will also be ready for battle on Sunday. Now that we know the stars will be ready, the question that lingers is who will walk away as the champions.

Golden State Warriors

gsw posterThere is a major concern for the Warriors coming into this game 7 and that is the uncertainty surrounding Andre Iguodala’s availability. If he can’t play quality minutes in this game 7 the Warriors. will lose on their home court. Taking into consideration that they are already without their centre, Andrew Bogut, if Iguodala is unavailable they will be short-handed. I am expecting another explosion from Steph much like we saw in game 4 when he went off and scored 38 points. Another 38-point performance might just be good enough for him to win his second ring. I am not concerned about the stars for Golden State, the role players, however have been absent for the past two games. If guys like Harrison Barnes and Shaun Livingston can get into their groove offensively the Warriors will be on their way to another title. Draymond Green will also be pivotal in this game 7, Green has to be the primary rim protector for the Warriors. In game 6 Lebron had his own way in the paint as he exploded for another 41 points, this simply can happen in Oracle if GSW are to win come Sunday.

The Warriors have to do a better job rebounding the ball than they did in the previous two games and thats where guys like Festus Ezeli and Anderson Varejao become important with their size inside the paint. These players (Ezeli and Varejo) have to battle inside to give GSW a chance on the boards. Steph Curry has to set the tempo early so the other players can get in their groove and feed off his intensity. I believe the ’73 wins’ Warriors still have one last masterclass left in them and we might see it on Sunday.

Cleveland Cavaliers

cavaliersThe Clevland Cavaliers have done a great job to put themselves in a position to rewrite the history books. I think they are in a very good place and could win another game to cap their season off with a championship win. Credit must be given to Tristan Thompson, he has been very good in these last few games. His intensity has been through the roof and I can argue that he has been the best defensive player in these finals. He has out fought Draymond and others from GSW. The Cavs will need his intensity and fight in this game 7 on the road at one of the loudest Arena in the NBA. As with Steph Curry, we know what we will get from LeBron James (he will be ready), so for the Cavs, much depends on the output of the role players (JR Smith, Richard Jefferson and others). There is a minor concern surrounding Kyrie’s foot as he injured it in game 6, if it bothers him in game 7 then Cavs will be in trouble because they will be losing valuable offense. Cavs have to out-rebound the Warriors and increase their physicality if they are to get the Win in the bay area. As I said in my preview to game 6, Kevin Love should not be starting for the Cavs. Love is becoming a liability for the Cavs on both offense and defence. He has not shot the ball and when he does shoot his percentage has not been good. Richard Jefferson has done well when called upon, I think coach Lue should call upon him once more.

Predictions

I want to point out a very interesting stat from the first 6 games. The average margin of victory through the first 6 games has been 19.7 points, this is quite intriguing. I am going to go against that stat and say this game 7 will be close and GSW wins by 5 points.

Disclaimer

If Iguodala can’t play value minutes, I would rescind my Warriors prediction and switch to Cavs winning by about 5 points.

The Copa America Centenario moves on to the quarter-finals stage with the likes of Argentina, Chile, Mexico and the USA all booking their spot. The tournament has been eye-catching from Brazil trashing Haiti (7-1) before losing (1-0) to Peru to ‘controversially’ being eliminated from the tournament. We saw flashes of brilliance from Lionel Messi after he scored a 26 minute Hat Trick in Argentina’s 5-0 thrashing of Panama. The USA scoring four goals against Costa Rica was impressive, so too was Mexico surprisingly beating Uruguay 3-1 to get their campaign under way. This tournament has brought it all from beautiful goals to impressive saves and unnecessary red cards. Now that the proverbial ‘Men’ have been separated from the ‘boys,’ what can we expect from the teams left in the tournament. Who will be making it into the Semi-Finals stage and what can we expect from CONCACAF’s two remain teams (USA and Mexico) as the tournament progresses?

Argentina Vs Venezuela

venezula
Venezuela has been on a fairy tale run securing victories against Jamaica and Uruguay to book their spot in the quarters finals. I believe the fairy tale will soon come to an end for the Venezuelan national team. It has been a good run but there is no way they can get past this Argentine team. Venezuela has to ensure that they come out ready to play and that they keep their defensive shape in the opening quarter hour of the game so they don’t get humiliated. If Argentina gets an early goal it will be a long evening for the Venezuelans; Argentina with the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain are simply breath-taking on the attack. Despite their sublime attacking ranks, Argentina still has defensive issues but I don’t think Venezuela is good enough to capitalize on those deficiencies.

Argentina-Announced-their-Copa-America-2016-teamI believe that Argentina will overpower this Venezuela team to move on to the Semi-Finals and one step closer to winning the tournament. I will be looking to see Lionel Messi playing from the start, as good as Argentina is they are a completely different proposition when the ‘little magician’ is playing. Argentina has scored 10 goals in their first three games in the tournament, this statistic can be deceiving so it important to point out that 8 of those goals came against Panama and Bolivia. I know that Venezuela is better than Panama and Bolivia so Argentina has to come with guns blazing to avoid an upset. With that said I am predicting a comfortable victory for Argentina, they will win this game by three clear goals (4-1).

Mexico vs Chile

mexicoThis game between Mexico and Chile will be the most anticipated of the four quarter finals game. This Mexican team has been playing some lovely football and I think they are well positioned to stake a claim for this trophy. Mexico has experience in their backline with long time veteran, Rafa Marquez marshalling the troops at the back. Rafa Marquez will ensure that the players are ready to go for what will no doubt be their toughest challenge thus far in the tournament. Mexico in this match has to stick to their game plan, that is they cannot allow the Chileans to force them into playing a physical game because they won’t be able to win that way. They need to get down the flanks and play balls into the box for Chicharito to get on the end of. If Mexico can get an early goal, they will be able to sit back and allow Chile to have all the position and play on the counter which they are deadly on. Mexico has to be disciplined, keep their defensive shape and play the game simple.

Chile Copa America 2016 Squad, Schedule, Kit, Live StreamThe Chilean are the defending Copa America champions and they will be looking to do a repeat. This game will be a good test for Chile and they will have to be at their best if they are going to get past the Mexicans. The pace of Alexis Sanchez will be very important for Chile in this game; as I noted above, Mexico has veteran Rafa Marquez in their backline so if Sanchez can play the ball into Vargas he can run at Marquez and Chile will have a good chance of scoring goals. Arturo Vidal will also be very important for Chile in this game, he has to dominate the midfield and ensure that his team doesn’t lose a lot of balls in front of the Centre Backs. Chile plays at their best when their two superstars are at their best so if Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal are playing at their best Mexico will be in trouble.

My Prediction

I predict that Mexico will get the better of Chile, I have a strong feeling that Mexico will make it to the finals of this competition. The score at the end will be 2-1 in favour of Mexico.

Then there were eight: Copa America Quarter Finals Part 1

Posted: June 16, 2016 by 48-NINETY SPORTS in Uncategorized

The Copa America Centenario moves on to the quarter-finals stage with the likes of Argentina, Chile, Mexico and the USA all booking their spot. The tournament has been eye-catching; from Brazil trashing Haiti (7-1) before losing (1-0) to Peru to controversially being eliminated from the tournament. We have seen flashes of brilliance from Lionel Messi after he scored a 26 minute Hat Trick in Argentina’s 5-0 thrashing of Panama. The USA scoring four goals against Costa Rica was also impressive as well as  Mexico surprisingly beating Uruguay 3-1 to get their campaign under way. This tournament has brought it all from beautiful goals to impressive saves and unnecessary red cards.

Now that the proverbial ‘men’ have been separated from the ‘boys,’ what can we expect from the eight teams left in the tournament? Who will be making it into the Semi-Finals stage and what can we expect from CONCACAF’s two remain teams (USA and Mexico) as the tournament progresses.

USA vs Ecuador

copa-america-usa-2016-usa-vs-costa-rica-at-soldier-field-stadium-in-chicago-309665The US men’s national team made their way into the quarter-finals after securing two wins from their remaining two group games having lost their opener against Colombia. The US were superb against Costa Rica as they blew past the team from central America (4-0) before easing past Paraguay with a (1-0) victory. The US team will be without their starting right back, Deandre Yedlin for this game against Ecuador after he received a red card in the last group game against Paraguay resulting in a one-game suspension. Yedlin’s absent will be heavily felt against an Ecuador team that plays a lot of their football on the flanks.  They will also miss his pace going forward and his ability to get balls into the opponent’s penalty area.

#19-Copa-America-Ecuador-MainEcuador will be looking to build on their performances from the group stages that saw them drawing two games and winning one. This US team provides a nice challenge for the South Americans; if they are to progress into the Semi-Finals, making a statement against the US would be a nice way of sending a warning to their rivals. This game will be won in the middle of the park; whichever team wins the midfield battle will win the game. Team USA has to come out with the mentality of getting Michael Bradley on the ball in areas where he will be able to get balls up to Clint Dempsey and cause problems for Ecuador. Ecuador should be looking to get the ball on the flanks through Jefferson Montero and Antonio Valencia, if those two can get quality balls into the box then Ecuador will be very tough to beat. Ecuador will also be very physical and the USA has to be prepared so they don’t get caught off guard and allow the game to slip away from them. I am predicting a heavily contested match and we will see some beautiful football but in the end, Ecuador will prove to be too strong for the USA

Peru vs Colombia

#44-Copa-America-Peru-MainPeru made it to the quarter-final after defeating Brazil (1-0) with a controversial handball goal, nevertheless, they made it and they could create some problems for Colombia. One thing that we have learnt from this Peru team is that they know how to defend; they kept two clean sheets in their three group games. They will be looking to sit back and let Colombia have all the ball and then try to hit them on the counter-attack.

Colombia-Team-Full-Squad-here-For-Copa-America-2016This Colombian team doesn’t give much away either so it will be an interesting game when the two meet on Friday. Colombia should be looking to dominate position and getting the ball to James Rodriquez so he can find pockets of space to play balls into the box for Carlos Bacca to get on the end of. Colombia has the better team and they have more dangerous weapons on the attack. They can play the ball through the middle with James or play down the flanks with Juan Cuadrado. This diversity will cause problems for Peru as they won’t be able to adapt to the playing style of Colombia. I am predicting a masterclass from Colombia some of what we saw two years ago in Brazil.

The NBA finals will roll on with a game 6 at the Quicken Loans Arena in Clevland as the Cavaliers look to force a game 7 in Oakland. This NBA final have been spectacular, with every game the level of unpredictability increases. Many thought the series would end in 4 games after the Cavs lost the opening two games, however, this series has become a potential 7 game series. I must admit that Kyrie has really been impressive in these finals. Through the first five games, he has averaged 28.3 points per game. Steph Curry, on the other hand, has been wildly inconsistent  but if the Golden State Warriors go on to win the title, his performance in that pivotal game 4 will never be forgotten. Those two players are my MVP picks for the respective teams.

Will we see a game 7 or will GSW close out the Cavs on their home floor just as they did in last year’s finals?

Golden State Warriors

I picked the Warriors to win in game 5 on their home court and after the first couple of minutes when Steph hit two three pointers I was convinced that the NBA finals were over, boy was I wrong. The Warriors scored 61 points in the first half and then followed that up with 36 in the second half. If they are going to score 36 points in a half and defend the way they did in game 5, they most certainly will lose. GSW in that game 5 missed their vocal leader Draymond Green who was serving his one-game suspension. The Warriors at moments in the game looked overmatched on defence. LeBron had his way in the paint as there wasn’t much shot blocking from Golden State on the court. In game 6 with Draymond back the warriors will have that edge that they often play with when Draymond is on the court. His presence will help the Golden State inside the paint and they will be in a good position to win on the road. Andrew Bogut won’t be playing in game 6 due to a knee injury he sustained in game 5, so the Warriors have to do more as a team to protect the basket and win the battle on the boards.

Klay Thompson

Klay Thompson

Klay Thompson had a great game through first three quarters in game 5, however, he was no match for the dynamic duo, (LeBron and Kyrie) in the 4th quarter, he can’t afford to fizzle out in the 4th quarter in game 6 on the road. Steph Curry wasn’t good enough in that home loss and I think he will bounce back just as he did in game 4 when he dropped 38 points after his team had lost by 30 the previous game. The Warriors in this game 6 will need a better effort from Harrison Barnes and Andre Iguodala, they missed too many shots in game 5 and many of those were makeable shots.

Cleveland Cavaliers

LeBron James and Kyrie Irving

LeBron James and Kyrie Irving showed up big on the road to give their team a chance of staging what would be the most historic comeback in NBA finals (no team has ever won the NBA after being down 3-1). I was impressed by what I saw from James; he set the tone early and that was vital for his team on the road. The Cavs will need his leadership at home in game 6 if they are to win and force a game 7. James settled for a lot of jump shot in that game 5 and luckily for him a lot of them were falling. He can’t settle for these shots at home when he has the ability to drive and finish strong at the rim. Kyrie for me has been Cavs’ most valuable player in these finals, he is a scoring machine and he has given the Cavs a real chance of staging the biggest comeback in NBA finals history. Kyrie has outplayed every defender that the Warriors has put on him this series and I think his offensive explosiveness will be crucial in this game 6.

Kevin Love has been underwhelming through the first 5 games and I don’t think he should be starting in game 6. Richard Jefferson has been doing well when called upon, I want to see him getting the start. I liked what I saw from JR Smith in game 5, he was putting the ball on the floor and getting to the rim. JR Smith is known as a stop up shooter but whenever he puts the ball on the floor he can get into paint and finish at the rim. We need to see more of this from him in game 6, Cavs need at least 15 points from him. Tristan Thompson has been good in the finals with his intensity and the rebounds, he will also be vital for Cavs at home.

Prediction

I am predicting that the Cavs will find a way to win on their home court and we will be heading to a game 7 on Sunday.

The NBA finals will move back to Oakland California for a pivotal game 5 with the Golden State Warriors being one win away from becoming two-time NBA champions. The first four games have been eye opening; I have been shocked by LeBron’s failure to take over when the games needed to be taken over. The stats say that no team has ever come back from being down 3-1 to win the NBA finals; with that said the big question is, will the Clevland Cavaliers rewrite history or will The Warriors close the series out on their home court in game 5?

The Warriors in game 4, scored 17 three pointers from 36 attempts, they averaged 13 per game during the regular season on route to a record 73 wins. When the Warriors are attempting and making three-point shots they are unstoppable. I wrote in one of my older posts that the Warriors have perfected the art of taking and making three point shots, we saw some of that in game 4 which they won by 11 points. The reigning two-time MVP, Steph Curry showed up big in game 4 hitting 7 three-pointers as he scored 38 points and led his team to victory. Klay Thompson was also good as he scored 25 points. Warriors responded well after their blowout in game 3. They got back to their identity playing their own game and also playing with some physicality and intensity. Draymond Green was also good on the boards as he brought his physicality that was missing in game 3. The Warriors will be without that physicality in game 5 as the NBA decided to upgrade the common foul that Green got in game 4 to a flagrant foul which resulted in a one-game suspension. Green picked up the flagrant for his reaction to LeBron stepping over him. This was a fair call but I question the consistency of the NBA officials. Draymond could have been suspended in the western conference finals for what was a more serious incident, so I would like to know how he escaped that suspension but not this one. Draymond Green’s absence will be huge, however, I think the Warriors will use this a motivation and they will win on their home floor to clinch the title.

Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers will be heading to Oakland with their backs against the wall. I think they have blown their chance of winning their first NBA title after losing game 4 on their home floor. The Cavs to their credit did not play badly in game 4, they didn’t get enough from their best player. Lebron James has to shoulder most of the blame for the collapse as his team had the chance of winning games 1 and 4 but Lebron shrunk and could not deliver the victory for his team. In those two games, Lebron averaged just 24 points, that’s not good enough from one of the best players in the world. Kevin love was not good in game 4. I think he shouldn’t have played at all but overall his performance in these finals has been underwhelming. Kyrie Irving  played extremely well in game 4 as he scored 34 points. He has been Cavs best player throughout this series. The Cavs will need Kyrie’s explosiveness and LeBron’s dominance to avoid another disappointment, the bench as well has to do a better job of containing the Warriors when Kyrie and LeBron are off the court.

I think at this point that the result of this NBA finals is a forgone conclusion with the Warriors having the advantage. If the Cavs are going to extend this series, they will need effort on both ends of the court and they have to keep the turnover at a minimum.

Prediction

Warriors will win the second NBA title by winning on their home floor. The absence of Draymond will mean that Cavs have a chance but the Warriors will win a close game.
